Final Major Project- The Real Flower Company

Scented Direct Mail: As the Real flower company pride themselves on their exquisite scents direct mail would seem ideal to send out examples of the scents. Lid is opened to reveal smell.

Real Flower Brochure /(Flip Book): This brochure is used to reinforce the brands message and values. This will explain why they are different and will reinforce their view of ‘createing flowers without costing the earth’. Each page interprets the growth of the flower.

Flower Calendar: At the end of each month the perforated petals can be ‘picked’ off.

Growth: This I feel is one of my strongest concepts in which I feel I would like to pursue. Throughout my major project I was certain that I wanted to keep my concept simple and non complicated. Thinking of other ways I could send out a message I realized there was a concept within the mechanics of the stationary. I realized that the unfolding of the stationery interpreted the flower 'growing'

To develop this idea I will be looking into paper folding techniques and I will also be looking at refining the idea using much more sophisticated, suitable images for the appropriate object. This concept could be used in different areas.

Final Major Project- The Real Flower Company

This is a idea I came up with whilst working on my final major project. I wanted to upload it to my blog to show the way I was thinking and looking at the logo. I think this idea has potential but goes the opposite direction in what I am trying to say about The Real Flower Company.

Final Major Project- The Real Flower Company

Currently working on my major project I decided to revisit my logo design. I decided one of the important factors I needed to include in the identity is that the real flower company are a ethical brand leader within the flower area. Coming up with the strapline 'fresh flowers naturally' I decided to begin including this. Upon including my strapline within my previous design I felt that nothing in the logo represented natural as the logo was very clean, neat and slick and I felt I needed to address this.

Browsing on font websites I came across floral dingbats. I decided this could be used as a potential element within my design as the flowers r very rough and sketchy. I feel this gives a great handrawn, natural, original effect. I do need to be careful though as I want to avoid making the identity look too old.

Final Major Project

So far this is the final logo for my rebrand of The Real Flower Company. My aim was to position The Real Flower Company as a high end luxury brand. I wanted to reflect their professionalism, attential to detail and high quality service. I am very pleased with this logo because I feel it reflects the aims I set out to do. I used a simple, light  sanserfif typeface which I think is complemented well by the solid ornimental flower.

Final Major Project- The Real Flower Company Colour Pallette

Throughout my major project I have gathered many sources of inspiration. I have also began to create a colour pallette in which I can potentially apply to The Real Flower Company. My pallette currently contains many shades of green. However, I will continue to browse a wider selection for a strong collection of sophisticated, luxury colours

Final Major Project- The Real Flower Company

Here is another one of my ideas that has potential to be developed. Throughout my brief I have been investigating typographical ways of developing a final logo. Leading, Kerning and detail needs to be looked at.

final Major Project- The Real Flower Company

Here is one of my initial concepts for the re brand of The Real Flower Company. The idea behind this is quite simple. By using the flowing shape of a flower it can also create the 'w' in the word Flower. This idea definately has potential to develop looking at more sophisticated typefaces and shapes.

Final Major Project- The Real Flower Company

Here is one of my candle designs for The Real Flower Company. The Real Flower Company sell luxury scented candles ranging from £30 upwards. I feel at the moment the design on the existing candle is not very strong and does not reflect 'luxury'. Throughout this part of the brief I have been looking at a variety of packaging ideas, colours and finishes. I feel even frosted glass can add alot more sophistication. I could potentially look at following this through a colour coded range for each flavoured scented candle.

Final Major Project- The Real Flower Company

For the past few months I have been working on my final major project. At first I racked my brains to decide what subject I could base my project on. Unfortunately I spent weeks on end brooding about making a good final major project and worrying that id be working on a rubbish project that I wouldnt enjoy. In the end I decided to cut ties and simply choose.

Browseing on the internet I came across ' The Real Flower Company'. The Real Flower Company is a high end luxury florist made up of 6 talented florists who create bespoke bouquets, also offering creative services for weddings and events. Looking at The Real Flower Company in more depth I felt that this could be a brief with alot of potential.

As you can see from the master brief above, my proposition was to rebrand The Real Flower Company to also look at floristry materials including stationery, flower wrap, bows, tags etc. Researching into the company I realised that they also try their best to reduce their carbon footprint. This then encouraged me to look at packaging that can be easily recycled or possibly be made of recycled materials. I would also like to look at other ways the real flower company could reduce their effect on the environment.

For the past few weeks I have been looking at many logos and brands online and in books. I admit that I found the brief quite difficult at first as I personally felt that the existing identity had something in it and I didnt want my re-design to take anything away from their already established brand.

Finding this to be a negetive view I decided to erase this thought and think about the project as if they had no existing design which i feel has helped alot.

DCSF

This is a quick mock up I recently did for a brief for the DCSF under age drinking campaign. So far the execution hasn't been consider as it is just a quick mock up to get my idea across. Admittedly I feel it isnt answering the brief at the moment.
Discussing this idea with Ed walker he says he isnt so keen because he thinks it isn't saying anything. Ed believes that it should be brighter and less clinical if it is to attract kids. Ed's opinion is that kids may not care about health and they drink because they think its cool. This is the route Ed has suggested that I go down.
Ed also recomends that I could possibly use this idea for a different message. Perhaps raising the awareness about the sugar an calorie level.

Tap Vs Bottled?

This brief was to design two double page spreads for the article 'Water wars' in the Observer magazine. I decided to respond to this brief by showing the realities of tap water being bottled up and sold as 'pure bottled water'. Researching I discovered that many people cannot tell the difference between the quality of tap water and bottled water. I feel the strap line I created reflects my concept very well by portraying the idea that tap water is disguised by a branded bottle. I then extended my concept by photoshopping the word 'tapwater' in place of the brand name. I feel this concept is very strong but the execution can definately be revisited and improved.

Berghaus Optistud-YCN

Revisiting some of my old work I decided to upload some previous conceptual ideas. This brief was set for Berghaus in the YCN awards 08. The brief was to communicate 'Optistud' technology. I decided to respond to this brief by using humour and a unusual response of insects. The strapline: 'its the difference between staying on and falling off' showcases the strength of the optistud. If you use optistud technology you stay on... if not... you fall off.. The reason I decided to use insects as a concept was because insects are very small yet they have fantastic grip if they didn't have their strong grip (optistud) they would fall off I thought the images of the insects on their backs would be humourous. I think these ideas are good but they have the potential to be developed.

BBC Design Challenge

This is one of my design ideas for the BBC Design challenge. The brief was to design moving packs for employees who are moving to 'BBC North'. Usually being style based I thought it would be a good opportunity to explore materials and concepts behind the design. The above design is a birds eye view of a cardboard box to represent moving and packing. Photography would be used to allow the leaflet to look realistic. The leaflet would have a centred perferation. When being opened this would represent opening a box. In the left hand corner I Assosiated the 'This way up' packaging symbol with moving forward, looking to the future and moving up North. This would convey a positive message.
Although I didn't win the design challenge with my ideas the opportunity of being involved with the BBC has been fantastic. To be able to attend the BBC Base in manchester to pitch ideas to a BBC panel has been a great opportunity.

Species Of Spaces-Alexandra Park

At the beginning of our second year we were asked to visit a environment and jot everything down that you could see, hear and what you felt. People live there day to day lives and are continually absorbing information but what are they actually seeing and taking notice of? As I enjoying writing, I throughly enjoyed this brief and think it turned out to be a good piece of descriptive work.

It is 11:17 am and I am eating a quick snack whilst taking in everything around me. I am sat on a dark green wooden bench in Alexandra park in Edgely under a tree. I feel the sun shining on the back of my shoulders. The play area is full of laughter and shouting from children and parents.

The atmosphere is calm and relaxed. I observe mothers chatting to each other whilst pushing their children in the orange toddler safety swings. The children swinging backwards and forwards giggling with excitement. The warmth against my skin is interrupted by a slight breeze every now and again.

The park is situated away from the main road out of the way of the busy traffic. I am drowned by the colour green around me from the trees, plants and grass. The sky is pure blue, with only a scatter of clouds in the sky.

Outside the green metal fencing of the play area is a black dog stood waiting for its owners to finish in the park. I then spot a small boy trying to squeeze through the fence tugging at a tree, then running off to explore the playground. Parents are walking slowly whilst children are riding on trikes and daughters pushing their dolls in prams. The weather is warm yet breezy. Children dressed in T-shirts and shorts, few children wearing hats protected from the sun.

As I sit here I can hear birds singing, I cant see them but I can hear them. The play area is bright and colourful, it feels safe and well looked after. I gaze across to see a brunette middle aged mother on the small roundabout with two children, one sat in front and the younger child sat on her lap.

The play area is quite busy with children of all ages and children who are just learning to walk. The play area is also litter less, the only debris on the floor is the brown, crisp leaves that have fallen off the trees.

I look over at a small girl wearing a read jumper with blonde hair running around without a care in the world. I then notice a small child crying, I assume its because she has to leave. A small boy with a Thomas the tank engine T-shirt climbs onto the light blue, wooden rocking bird, the paint peeling to reveal the wood underneath.

The wagging tail of the dog as is it being stroked by children. Women of mixed ages, some mothers some possibly grandmothers.

One small girl on the swings is being pushed by her father who has been on his mobile phone for what seems a long time, takes her to the small roundabout and continues talking. I sense a bit of ignorance.

Women strolling at slow pace with buggies. One mother trying to deal with her small son who is having a tantrum. She is wearing a pink top with dark jeans and has blonde hair, she looks quite young. The silence is broken by the roaring of a plane.

I feel like I don’t quite belong here as I haven’t got children.

As I look to my right I notice that the flower beds needs tending to, it is taken over by weeds and bright yellow dandelions. Behind me is a brick building with green windows. The grass area with small chairs and tables is deserted, they must be preparing for dinner as it is 11:44 am.

Over the neatly cut hedge I can just about see the top of the houses on the main road. You are unable to hear the traffic as the park is situation so far away.

Silence is broken again by another plane roaring in the direction of the airport.

The play area is surrounded by dark green metal fencing.

As the man gets off his mobile phone he places the small child dressed in a pink coat into her buggy to take her home. I somehow feel slightly disheartened for the child as the man spent most of the visit on his mobile phone.

At 11:57 am I decide to leave, above the sky is now blanketed with white, fluffy clouds.

As I open the gate to the park entrance I stroll along the grey concrete path towards the exit, placing my food wrapper in the grey, metal letter bin.

I continue strolling past huge, colourful flower beds. As I approach the exit I can hear birds singing loudly, the front of the park is more calm and quiet. I stop for a second to scan the bush on my right, as I hear a rustling towards the bottom, I assume it must be a squirrel. Towards the front of the park there are a few older people enjoying a game of bowls.

Leaving the park I hear police sirens whizz by. The road is very busy and loud. Across the road from the park is Edgeley methodist church,

next door but one is the library next to some derelict toilets.

Walking towards the centre is a parade of shops in view, many estate agents, pubs and charity shops. The atmosphere isn’t as quiet and relaxed now as it is very loud and busy and somehow quite unsafe as you hear the cars drive by at speed. Approaching a pelican crossing I see a mother waiting to cross with her buggy. A few steps away from the pelican crossing I see two men in suits in the middle of the road waiting to cross, yet all the cars are continuing to drive, knowing it is unsafe the men continue to stand there.

There is a break in traffic and then a brief moment of silence till I walk past Mercian motors I hear people working and engines revving.

Walking past the college car park I feel a little unsafe / hesitant to cross as a car could sped out of nowhere. The atmosphere is very different from the park. Around me is busy roads with traffic and buses, people on mobiles and people in a rush. As I walk over the bridge I notice a cigarette on the floor still burning. Walking along Greek street I see a small boy admiring the Monsters vs Aliens advertisement and his mother pull him away.

The atmosphere is unsettled as I hear cars drive by with loud music. The college car park is full of cars trying to squeeze in to get a space.

A teenage girl is walking directly towards me with her head down messing with her mobile phone, yet I move out of her way to stop her from walking into me. At the back entrance of Greek street there are people congregating to chat and socialise. As I make my way through the canteen I hear a muffle of voices, people chatting and eating dinner. I also notice a guy shouting at the vending machine. As I leave the canteen I make my way up the stairs and I am greeted with nothing but the sound of my own footsteps.

Bourn-Monthly Article

Recently attending a portfolio visit at Bourn graphic design studio in Stockport. I continued to stay in touch with Mark Stringer and Matthew Hill these were the designers who gave me feedback on my current portfolio. Currently working on my 5,000 word critical journal based on student placements I thought it would be a good opportunity to email Mark and ask his views about student placement. As I continued to keep in touch, Mark asked me whether I would like to do a monthly blog article for the Bourn website. These articles were to discuss my experiences and thoughts on preparing to leave education, how I view the design industry and my aspirations for the future. You can read my full article by visiting: http://www.bourndesign.co.uk/blog/
Many thanks to Mark and Matt for giving me this opportunity

English Heritage-End Sting

This my final idea of a end sting for the English Heritage. A end sting is a 3-5 second animation used to reinforce what a company does. These can sometimes be seen at the end of a commercial for example. The English Heritage help to restore and preserve old buildings. I decided to reflect this in my end sting by showing a rough version of the logo, throughout the 3 second clip the logo gradually renews itself.

English Heritage-End Sting Flicker Book

Here is a short video of a flicker book that I decided to purchase. When at portfolio visits it was requested that when showing animation work that it would be a nice idea to actually show the final outcome instead of showing still shots. Thinking about how I could take this further than using a laptop or mobile phone I came up with the idea to create a flicker book. I guessed the book would create the same effect but using a different medium. The above video is the simulation that I was sent by flikaclip to give me a idea of what my end sting would look like when made into the book. Recently receiving my book I was very pleased with the results, I like the fact that I have thought differently and found a unusual way to present a piece of my work.

BBC Design Challenge

19/11/09
Thursday 19th november I took part in a live pitch at the BBC studios in manchester. The BBC have given the students of Stockport and Oldham college a live brief for the move from London to Manchester. I decided to involve myself in this brief independently. The brief involves designing a series of moving packs for the staff moving up north. I feel the presentation went very well and I was pleased with the outcome. The opportunity to pitch to the BBC was an great experience. Even though I would of liked to of worked on my initial ideas more, I was still able to go and present comfortably and confidently. I received positive feed back for my ideas and I am extremely pleased with the outcome. The next deadline is 7th December where they requested that our initial ideas should be developed.

Logo Design

Here is a small selection of logos that I have designed. Many throughout my 15 month placement at Avalanche Creative. Logo design is where I feel my strengths lie. I enjoy the challenge of conveying a message within one mark. Advice received at recent portfolio visits is that I should consider using a small key for the name of each company if it is to be included in my portfolio. It has also been suggested that I choose a selection of logos to show my thoughts and ideas in progress.

SDS Iris Leaflet

As a designer I love to design for function and to keep my designs simple. I mainly enjoy designing leaflets as I like to deliver information quickly and easily. My first real attempt at leaflet design was set at Avalanche Creative for School Data Services. I worked solely on this project and thoroughly enjoyed it. I enjoyed the process of working with a limited amount of space. I found experimenting with the type very beneficial as it allowed me to experiment with point size, font, leading and kerning and it allowed me to make decisions within laying out the information correctly.
