Final Major Project- The Real Flower Company

Recently working on my major project I wanted to develop the concept of growth. I have been browsing on Whitney Woods and became inspired by their direct mail ideas. Having an idea similar to the above image I decided this concept could be worth developing. My next step is to hand make the pop up examples and see whether they work as well as I imagine. My concept is adjusted from the image at the bottom. This concept will be a direct mail idea, when unfolded the last page has a flower popping up which will interpret a flower 'blooming' once I decide whether this concept is worth developing I will begin to refine what type of information I will be putting in and what will be relevant for expressing the brands voice.

Benwells Print Specialists

Whilst working on my major project looking at different types of print finish I came across a company called Benwells. Benwells are Print Specialists in embossing, foil blocking, die cutting and printing. Whilst researching I realized how important the finish of a design is and realized this should be taken into account when ideas are being developed and not just at the end. Whilst working on my major I realized that the finish of a design can add a whole different perspective.

Blackpool Zoo Logo

I came across this logo whilst browsing online. This is the logo for Blackpool Zoo. I really like this logo because its modern and up to date. I also like the abstract style of the waves that create the elephant.

Whitney Woods is dedicated to ideas and products in advertising, marketing and promotions. This includes pop ups, interative mailers, paper crafts and much more.  I would definately recommend you browse their website, as it shows you a whole new way of thinking when it comes to ideas within direct mail and promotions.

Cookies And Cream logo

Here is a logo I came across whilst browsing on the internet. I love the way the shape of the '&' has been used to create the ice cream. I think the idea is so simple yet strong.

When Logo Design Goes Wrong

Whilst browsing on logo design blog I came across this website. This is a website which contains logos that have gone wrong. Some of these logos are still actually being used! I find this fascinating how when we see certain things we can relate it to something else and create our own association which isnt actually intended.

Logo Inspiration

Being very keen on logo design I recently discovered a blog dedicated to this subject. This blog contains many useful links including articles on bad, good and ugly logo design, the 100 best global brands of 2009, tips on creating a logo type and many more intresting articles. I also discovered a link to the top ten best logo inspiration galleries.

Inspiration In My Surroundings

Previously visiting London I found it useful to take quick snaps of anything I found in my surroundings to be of inspiration to me in which I would be able to use in my final major project. I took pictures of this pub as I liked the flow within the anchor logo. I also thought the foliage on the sign was traditional but modern. I would like to try and interpret this type of effect in my major project

Is There A Happy Ending?

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) launched the above commercial as part of its Act on CO2 campaign. I personally think this advert is great. The campaign, in the form of a bedtime story, begins with a father reading to his daughter but the story then turns into a terrifying account of the impact of climate change.

But this advert has caused quite a stir. The Advertising Standards Authority in the UK is currently responding to 375 complaints about the impact of the commercial on young children, who also recommend that the ad be shown after 9 pm only. Many complaints about the commercial suggested that the material was distressing for children.

What Is All The Fuss About?

Recently wondering what all the fuss was about with Avatar I agreed to go and see it with a friend. Not being much of a film fan I was over come with dread when I found out the movie was actually over 3 hours long! Fearing that I would get bored and lose interest.

The story takes place on a planet called pandora which inhibits its own race of ten foot tall blue skinned creatures with the own world and culture. It is discovered that a valuable mineral is inhibited under what is known as 'The tree of life' in which the human race want to get to. This would mean that pandora would be destroyed.

This would be a film you would have to see for yourself to understand the story of avatar, but this film definately made me realise how selfish humans can possibly be when it comes to money. I thought the graphics and effects used in the film were fantastic and I often found myself saying 'wow' out loud. This was also the first time I have seen a film in 3D.

The Art Of Tea

Twinings have created another new concept for their `Discover the Art of Tea’ campaign. This advertisment sees an artist brewing thousands of cups of Twinings infusions to create a image of a waterfall. This concept uses the natural colours of Twinings Infusions to help bring the tea to life. It is hoped that people will be enticed to discover the many blends in the world of Twinings Infusions.
I think this concept is fantastic. Watching the artist create this advert using only the colours of the tea bags was very intreguing.

Barclaycard Advert

Here is another addition to the Barclaycard adverts which follows on from their water slide concept.
It is said that the aim of these adverts is to emphasise how banking with barclaycard can make your life easier.

I  definately think these adverts grab the audiences attention. The concepts used continually through these adverts are very surreal, humorous and memorable which is very important for a advert.

Say The Colour Not The Word!

Previously visiting a lecture by Andy Sandoz at the liverpool design syposium 2009 he spoke very much about the brain and creativity which I find extremely fascinating. During the lecture he shown the above example which I had never seen before and I have found it fascinating ever since! I decided to research this and came across somebody else's blog with the same post.
"While you start identifying the colours, your brain also starts reading out the words, before you even realise it. Why is it so difficult? Because the right half of your brain is trying to say the colour, while the left side of your brain is trying to say the word," says one web site.
In fact this phenomenon is called The Stroop Effect. The famous "Stroop Effect" is named after J. Ridley Stroop who discovered this strange phenomenon in the 1930s. So, if you're like most people, your first inclination was to read the words, 'red, yellow, green...,' rather than the colours they're printed in, 'blue, green, red...' For instance, for the word BLUE, you should say "RED". But sometimes you end up reading the word, than identifying the colour.
writing taken from:http://precogssnickers.blogspot.com/2006/03/say-colour-not-word.html
The reason find this fascinating is because it is such a simple example. When looking at the chart I can feel that moment of hesitation and conflict. Finding myself trying to say the word an not the colour. Even though it is very simple you find yourself having to concentrate.

Dove Evolution

The video above is a video I have previously seen on youtube. When I first saw this video I thought it was great. Some of you may not be aware, but Dove has developed 'Campaign for real beauty' to make change to the way real women and young girls perceive themselves. This video was created to show the narrow definition of beauty in media terms.

No doubt media has a very high impact on female perceptions. It is not suprising that many girls often feel dissatisfied with their own appearence and bodies when seeing women on tv and in magazines. This video has been created to show the transformation of a average looking female turn into a beautiful model by the help of make-up artists, stylists, hair dressers, photographers, designers and of course, Adobe Photoshop. Only by seeing this transformation we can see how much work goes into making these celebs and models look beautiful. As Dove says ' No wonder our perception of beauty is distorted'

You tube

YouTube is a video sharing website on which users can upload and share videos. The wide range of topics covered by YouTube has turned video sharing into one of the most important parts of Internet culture. Recently I have began to use you tube for searching tutorials. Whenever I want to know how to do something I will search You tube for a tutorial. I find this very helpful as you can gather thousands of search results and find just about anything you are looking for.

Change Foundation

Previously working on a self initiated brief on my HND I was working on a project that I called the 'Change Foundation'. My final logo design was three intergrated 'c' shapes. This would convey the message of coming together, caring, movement and change (although many people have their own connotations). The color green is to represent nature, and the environment. Recently browsing the internet I found a similar logo design for a different company. I think its quite strange when you find designs that you have previously designed yourself sometime or another, not knowing they may already exist.

Beck's Bottle Art

As my part time job is bar work I recently noticed new labels on the Becks beer bottles. I had no clue as to why they had done this. Recently deciding to look into this I found a blog post on the Creative Review Website. From a design point of view I think it is a interesting scheme that Beck's is involved in and I think some of the labels I have previously seen are nice. Although speaking from a consumer point of view, upon seeing these bottles myself I was slightly unaware of the brand of beer. This could possibly result in a drop of sales regarding the beer. From a design view I can appreciate why Beck's did this, Unfortunately none design minded people possibly wouldn't appreciate it.

Posted by Creative Review, 24 July 2008, 15:20

From 1st August until Christmas, bottles of Beck's beer were adorned with the work of four emerging artists. This is a new scheme called Beck's Canvas, a collaboration between the German brewery and London's Royal College of Art.

The RCA asked their graduates and students to submit work on the theme of individuality specially for this project and a jury of RCA artists selected the winning artists: Rita Ikonen, Tom Price, Charlotte Bracegirdle and Simon Cunningham.

Of course, Beck's has supported contemporary British art over the years and has previously persuaded artists such as Gilbert & George, Damien Hirst, Rachel Whiteread and Tracey Emin to create label artwork for limited edition bottles. However, this year Beck's Canvas will be mass producing and distributing a whopping 27 million of the special bottles - making this one of the largest ever public art commissions.

In fact, the combined area of 27 million Beck's beer bottle labels (143,100 square metres) is greater than the floorspace of The National Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art and The Louvre combined. That's about the size of 260 Cistine Chapel ceilings. Or, any sports fans reading, 35 football pitches.
